the Second Amendment

A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

A WELL REGULATED MILITIA,

A "well regulated militia", back when, our constitution was written meant every able bodied and armed man who was not in the Army whose help could be requested in a time of danger.

When the Constitution was ratified, the Framers unanimously believed that the "militia" included all of the people capable of bearing arms.

"well regulated" … the term meant only what it says, that the necessary militia is well regulated (trained), but not commanded by the national, state, or local government.

BEING NECESSARY to the SECURITY of a FREE STATE,

A "free state". Could simply mean … a State of Freedom.

We allegedly live in a "free state". In order to be free (and remain so), that state must be secure (a guarantee the government cannot make). If the state is not secure, it is not free.

"State" simply meant country; and "free" almost always meant free from despotism, not from some other country

the RIGHT of the PEOPLE to KEEP and BEAR ARMS,

In the United States, which has an English common law tradition, a longstanding right to keep and bear arms was recognized prior to the creation of a written national constitution.

Today, the right is specifically protected by the US Constitution and many state constitutions, which grant a right to own arms for individual use and to bear these same arms both for personal protection and for use in a militia.
