VR-TEL

I've been playing with phone networks for a few years and have gotten my friends and family migrated over to a private calling network using a VOIP PBX. This was so easy to do and I learned alot in the process! I want to dump all the information of what I found. Nothing I mention is an endorsment of products but just a lead for others to follow.

Why are private calling networks relevant?

  • They are far more secure than traditional Calling or using an app like WhatsApp, Signal or Instagram
  • They are better quality. Make a VOIP call on a nereby server and compare it with a normal provider call
  • Even though there are costs involved, the peice of mind of owning the service and having it be worls better than the free options is nice.
  • You can customize the whole experience, custom "Ringing Tones" Voicemail boxes, funky custom hardware phones and your choice of software phones make it fun to play with!

We take voice calling for granted without any thought about really where the data travels. Something that crosses my mind is that all of these comprehensive services such as voice and video calls are being offered through a myriad of apps for free. Free at what cost? I'm not going to spend alot of time outlining my feelings on this just yet but will link to a separate article on what I percieve to be the problem.

I also want to open the network to others and have figured out a structure that not only gives others a quiality service but will also allow people who want to tinker with the network the ability to capitalize on the opportunity.
